Where to Eat, Stay, and Visit for an Awesome Family-Friendly Weekend in Louisville, Kentucky

Family getaways are more than just a break from the ho-hum routine; they’re a time to reconnect, spend quality time together, and make memories. Although family travel is expensive and stressful at times, it’s so important to my family. When I think back to some of my favorite family memories, they often arise from time away from home and on an adventure — that time we stumbled upon an epic playground in a new city or the afternoon we whiled away eating pastries at a cozy cafe.

My hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, is an excellent place for a family getaway. I’ve lived here nearly my entire life and love giving recommendations to those traveling to Derby City. Here are my top picks for a family-friendly weekend getaway to Louisville, including where to visit, eat, and stay.

Kentucky Science Center

One of the most family-friendly places in Louisville is the Kentucky Science Center. The huge museum is full of hands-on fun, like Who Forted? A Building Experience, where visitors can create and test forts, and The World We Create, where they can build and test bridges and a ball racetrack. Young kids love the science center’s indoor climbing structure and pool noodle forest.

Who doesn’t want to run through a grove of soft, colorful pool noodles? It’s easy to spend an afternoon here, and it’s a guaranteed family favorite.

Speed Art Museum

The Speed Art Museum is a true hidden gem in Kentucky. The South 3rd Street Museum is the oldest and largest art museum in the state. It has captivating exhibits for all ages. Exhibits focus on Kentucky artists, Native American art, 18th and 19th century art, and more. The museum has a theater, cafe, and extraordinary temporary exhibits, like Kathia St. Hilaire—Invisible Empires, which features Kathia St. Hilaire’s first major museum exhibition.

Art Sparks is the family-friendly showpiece of the Speed Museum, however. Here, the entire family can enjoy 15 hands-on activities. There’s a screen where visitors can dance or wave ribbons to create colorful, digital art. There are also places to make art through tracing, creating shadows, building, and more. I often have trouble getting kids to leave this area; they love it so much.

Nord’s Bakery

We almost always visit a local doughnut shop on family vacations. It starts our day off with smiles all around. Nord’s Bakery is an incredible doughnut shop in Louisville. Our favorite flavors are the Chocolate with Peanuts, Chocolate Long Johns, and Cinnamon Sugar Twists, but you can’t go wrong.

Trust me, and buy some sugar cookies for later in the day; you won’t regret it.

Con Huevos

In terms of excellent Louisville restaurants, I also highly recommend Con Huevos, which serves fresh Mexican breakfast and lunch dishes. There are several locations around Louisville, and menu items include Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Tacos, and Avocado Toast. The kid’s menu features miniature pancakes and the Huevitos Combo with eggs, bacon, and fruit. Con Huevos is always a crowd-pleaser!

El Mundo

El Mundo has outstanding Mexican food, and I highly recommend the Mole Poblano Enchiladas and their margaritas. The Bardstown Road location takes reservations, which can eliminate some stress while traveling as a family. There’s also a happy hour menu and a kid’s menu.

Hyatt Regency

Where you stay can make or break a family getaway. In my experience, everyone needs space to unwind, relax, and get a good night’s sleep. The Hyatt Regency in downtown Louisville is in the center of the action. It’s near Fourth Street Live!, the Louisville Slugger Museum, and the Kentucky Science Center. I think it’s great for families because it has suites and hotel rooms that can be connected. It also has an indoor pool, which excites kids in a way I’ll never fully understand.

Modern and Bright Highlands Airbnb

This two-bedroom Airbnb in the Highlands is also an excellent place for families to stay. It is conveniently located on Bardstown Road, where visitors can walk to restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops. Its full kitchen has appliances and a coffeemaker, perfect for making meals and snacks. The Airbnb also has a washer and dryer, which is handy, especially when traveling as a family.

Well, there you have it: my go-to list of recommendations for where families can eat, visit, and stay in Louisville, Kentucky. Because Derby City has many fantastic festivals, concerts, and events (hello, Kentucky Derby!) throughout the year, I suggest that guests look into what is happening while they’re visiting. For example, amazing family-friendly activities are happening throughout the Derby and holiday seasons. No matter when you decide to visit Louisville, I certainly hope you have a wonderful time and make awesome family memories.
